The head of the commercial department, applying for the position of an ordinary manager, or the head of the warehouse, who responded to the vacancy of the storekeeper, is usually refused even at the stage of consideration of the resume. Why do recruiters refuse over-qualified applicants?

What scares recruiters?

Fear number 1: possible problems with adaptation in the company. An experienced specialist with already established professional habits and tools - as they say, with his charter in a foreign monastery. It’s easier to take an employee without experience and to train “for yourself” than to retrain someone who “knows everything better than anyone else”.
Fear # 2: career ambition. Leading an employee who recently managed a team is not the most pleasant. What if he decides to claim the chair of his new boss?
Fear number 3: the risk of not working together with the team. Will it be comfortable for employees to work side by side with a former manager or an expert ace who, due to a higher level of professionalism, sees (and possibly fixes) all their shortcomings? And if a beginner is used to commanding a team, will he not pull the blanket over himself, in conflict with the informal leader?
Fear number 4: high salary wishes. A person is used to getting good money, and now he will have to rely on a salary corresponding to his chosen lower position. Pay extra for qualifications? But initially no one allocated funds for this. Yes, and why spend money on such a specialist, if you can find cheaper?
Fear # 5: doubts about employee loyalty. Will a highly qualified employee be loyal? Where is the guarantee that, sitting back in a more modest position, he does not look at the same time for a place that is more suitable for him in status?
Why does the specialist go down?

Today, probably, two main reasons for the so-called conscious downshifting can be distinguished.

Emotional burnout. Increased workloads, great responsibility, work with irregular schedules often lead to the formation of chronic fatigue, emotional burnout, and sometimes health problems. In this case, demotion is a kind of lifebuoy for a specialist who wants to stay in the profession and maintain his health.
Abrupt change in career vector. Sometimes a hobby develops into a serious hobby, and a person decides to abandon his usual lifestyle in order to devote enough time to a new direction of his activity.
How to get the desired job?
First, do not forget, in response to a vacancy that interests you, adjust your resume (leave only those skills that are required in the position in question; hide for the time being your achievements, received rewards) so as not to frighten the recruiter with regalia.

Secondly, since it is not possible to hide your previous (higher) position, focus on the cover letter, in which explain the reasons that prompt you to consciously go down. Naturally, one should not complain about emotional burnout, it is best to refer to the changing family situation. And already at the interview you will have the opportunity to demonstrate to the head that you are not going to compete with him and that the company will benefit from your cooperation.
